“Kindness is spreading sunshine into other people’s lives regardless of the weather”  RAKtivist

GCA Image Be kind 2 CjpgRecently I read the story of a mother trying to get her child home from overseas with COVID restrictions and all that we are currently experiencing globally. I found myself holding my breath as I read the heart-wrenching moments of cancelled bus transfers, cancelled flights, travel permits in a foreign language that didn’t even use the same alphabet as we do, and this young person’s struggle to find a way to make it through.  I finally exhaled when she wrote of the tearful reunion at the airport and the joy of the family being together again in this current world crisis.

This got me thinking about the impact of these times on all of us, as a global family of humanity, living through these moments in history together.  Human compassion, empathy, kindness, and caring for one another is showing itself – both in where we have it and where we don’t.  There are tales of amazing sacrifice, kindness in unexpected places, juxtaposed with stories of selfishness and man’s inhumanity to man.

I deeply hope that kindness, empathy, and compassion is who we are as a species at our core - that we are humans who care for and about one another - whether it's one another's suffering and triumphs, I hope we remember to be kind, and to remember that we are in this life, on this planet together - whether it's a family unit, a community, or simply recognising that the person next to us, or on the TV, or in another country is part of our human family - our humanity connects us, our experiences can move each other and we can be there in support with our hearts and hands.

To have compassion is a must, for to be closed off to the experiences of others diminishes us - it makes us less human. However, to care too much, for whatever reason, also diminishes us. Better to come from a space of our shared humanity, common love for everyone (and not just those in our sphere). And, we do this, to include ourselves in the kindness and compassion, for to love and care for the self, in humility and service, develops kindness, empathy, care, and compassion - within and without.

Kindness can soothe the savage beast, it can be a balm for pain and suffering, it is the very thing that gets us through the day. If you can be anything in the world, be kind.
